As we mark the 25th anniversary of the Land Hermit Crab Owners Society (LHCOS) on August 8th, it’s a moment to reflect on the journey of this incredible community. For a quarter of a century, LHCOS has been a beacon of support, education, and advocacy for land hermit crab enthusiasts worldwide. Let’s take a walk down memory lane, celebrating the milestones and achievements that have defined our beloved society.

The Birth of a Community

In 1999, a small group of hermit crab enthusiasts came together with a shared passion for these unique creatures. Their goal was simple: to create a platform where like-minded individuals could share knowledge, offer support, and promote the proper care of land hermit crabs. What began as a modest online group quickly blossomed into a thriving community, drawing members from around the globe.

LHCOS began as a List and then a Yahoo Group in 1999

Spreading Awareness and Education

One of the core missions of LHCOS has always been to educate both new and seasoned hermit crab owners. Over the years, we have developed an extensive library of resources, from care guides and habitat setup tutorials to articles on the natural behavior and biology of hermit crabs. Our educational efforts have empowered countless individuals to provide better care for their pets, leading to healthier and happier hermit crabs. Hermit crabs who are not only living longer in captivity but also breeding in captivity, leading to the world’s first captive bred land hermit crabs being kept as pets through the efforts of Hermit House founder and breeder Mary Akers and other Hermit House breeders. LHCOS continues to support Hermit House and its mission to keep wild crabs in the wild.

Advocacy and Conservation Efforts

LHCOS has also played a pivotal role in advocating for the ethical treatment of land hermit crabs. We’ve worked tirelessly to raise awareness about the harmful practices associated with the hermit crab pet trade, such as the collection of wild crabs and the sale of painted shells. Through our campaigns and partnerships with conservation organizations such as Hermit House, Crustacean Plantation and Make the Switch 4 Nature and hermit crab advocates around the world we’ve made significant strides in promoting sustainable practices and protecting wild hermit crab populations.

Community and Connection

At the heart of LHCOS is its vibrant and supportive community. Over the years, we’ve co-hosted numerous events, both online and in person, to bring members together. Annual conferences and social gatherings have fostered lifelong friendships and connections. The stories and experiences shared by our members have enriched our community and strengthened our collective bond.

Innovation and Growth

As we celebrate this milestone, it’s also a time to look forward. The last 25 years have seen remarkable advancements in the care and understanding of land hermit crabs. LHCOS has embraced innovation, leveraging new technologies and emerging research to enhance our educational resources and community engagement and we’re committed to staying at the forefront of hermit crab care and conservation.
