Our Mission

The Land Hermit Crab Owners Society (LHCOS) exists to protect land hermit crabs through education, advocacy, and ethical standards that prioritize animal welfare and the preservation of wild populations.

We work to replace misinformation with accurate, accessible education and to support practices that reduce harm caused by unethical sourcing, improper care, and commercial exploitation.

Our Vision

We envision a future where:

  • Wild land hermit crab populations are protected and respected
  • Ethical care standards are widely understood and practiced
  • Education replaces impulse buying and misinformation
  • Conservation-minded choices are the norm, not the exception

Our Core Values

Animal Welfare Comes First

Every decision we make is guided by what is best for the animal. We oppose practices that cause unnecessary harm, stress, or suffering and support care standards rooted in biology, behavior, and long-term health.

Conservation Responsibility

We recognize the direct connection between consumer behavior and the depletion of wild populations. Our work prioritizes reducing demand for wild-caught hermit crabs and promoting responsible alternatives.

Education Over Exploitation

Education is our primary tool for change. We believe informed keepers make better choices, and that transparency and accuracy are essential to ethical care and conservation.

Integrity & Independence

LHCOS maintains independence in its educational content, advocacy positions, and program decisions. We do not allow commercial interests to dictate our standards or messaging.

Transparency & Accountability

We are committed to clear communication about our programs, partnerships, and relationships. Transparency builds trust and strengthens the impact of our work.

Community & Collaboration

Positive change requires collaboration. We work with individuals and organizations whose missions align with ethical care and conservation, while respecting independence and appropriate boundaries.

  • Educational resources grounded in best-available knowledge
  • Advocacy efforts that address harmful industry practices
  • Programs that promote ethical standards and accountability
  • Partnerships aligned with conservation and welfare goals
  • Governance structures that support transparency and oversight

Our Commitment

LHCOS is committed to continual learning and improvement. As research advances and best practices evolve, we adapt our education and programs to reflect new knowledge while staying grounded in our core values.
