Volunteer with LHCOS

Land Hermit Crab Owners Society (LHCOS) is powered by volunteers who care deeply about hermit crab welfare, ethical trade, and public education. Whether you have a few hours a month or want to take on a regular role, your time and skills directly support programs that protect hermit crabs and the people who care for them.

Why Volunteer with LHCOS

Volunteering with LHCOS is about meaningful impact, not busywork. Our volunteers help reduce harm caused by misinformation, support responsible sellers and keepers, and ensure critical programs continue to operate sustainably.

By volunteering, you help:

  • Protect wild hermit crab populations through education and advocacy
  • Support ethical standards in the hermit crab hobby
  • Provide resources to classrooms, families, and new keepers
  • Strengthen a community built on respect, science, and compassion

Ways to Get Involved

We offer a range of volunteer opportunities to match different skills, energy levels, and availability.

Education & Outreach
Support public-facing education efforts, answer general care questions using approved resources, assist with event outreach, or help guide new keepers toward reliable information.

Claws in the Classroom (CIC)
Assist with processing classroom supply requests, building and sourcing supply lists, coordinating shipments, and following up with teachers. This role is logistical and mission-critical, even without direct classroom interaction.

Adoption & Support Programs
Help with application processing, follow-ups, documentation, and program coordination to ensure hermit crabs are placed responsibly and ethically.

Advocacy & Standards Support
Assist with programs like Approved Sellers and Verified Supporters by helping with reviews, record keeping, communications, or policy-aligned tasks.

Administrative & Operations Support
Support behind-the-scenes work such as data entry, documentation, scheduling, email responses, or process tracking. These roles are ideal if you prefer structured tasks and clear guidelines.

Creative & Communications
Help with writing, editing, graphics, or social media support aligned with LHCOS standards and messaging.

What We Look For

You do not need to be an expert to volunteer. We provide guidance, documentation, and clear expectations for every role.

We value volunteers who are:

  • Respectful and aligned with LHCOS values
  • Willing to follow established guidelines and processes
  • Comfortable working collaboratively and professionally
  • Reliable with communication and task follow-through

Time Commitment

Most roles are flexible and task-based. Some volunteers help occasionally as needs arise, while others take on recurring responsibilities. We work with you to find a role that fits your capacity.

Getting Started

Volunteering with LHCOS begins with a simple application so we can match you with the right opportunities and provide appropriate access and training.

After applying, you can expect:

  • A review by the volunteer coordination team
  • Clear role descriptions and expectations
  • Access to documentation and resources needed for your tasks
