This checklist helps teachers prepare a safe classroom habitat before introducing land hermit crabs to students. These animals have specific biological needs that must be maintained consistently in order to remain healthy in a school environment.
Use this checklist to confirm that your classroom is prepared before the animals arrive.
Habitat Setup
- Tank size is at least 20 gallons for a small group of hermit crabs
- Tank has a secure lid to maintain humidity
- Substrate is a sand/eco-earth mixture deep enough for burrowing (minimum 6 inches)
- Substrate is moist enough to hold shape when squeezed
- Habitat includes climbing structures and hiding places
- Habitat contains multiple natural shells in appropriate sizes
Environmental Conditions
- Temperature maintained between 75–85°F (24–29°C)
- Humidity maintained between 70–85%
- Reliable thermometer and hygrometer installed in the tank
- Heating method safely installed (typically under-tank heater placed on the side of the tank)
- Habitat conditions remain stable overnight and during weekends
Water and Food
- Two water dishes provided:
- Fresh water
- Marine-grade saltwater
- Water dishes are deep enough for crabs to enter but safe to exit
- Water is treated with dechlorinator before use
- Diet includes varied whole foods rather than commercial pellet diets
- Food dishes are cleaned and refreshed regularly
Student Interaction Plan
- Classroom rules emphasize observation rather than handling
- Students understand that hermit crabs are not passed around or handled during lessons
- Teacher supervises any necessary interaction with the habitat
- Students are encouraged to record observations and behaviors in journals
Weekend and Holiday Care Plan
- Responsible adult assigned to monitor habitat conditions during weekends
- Care plan established for school holidays and long breaks
- Backup caretaker identified in case the primary caretaker is unavailable
- Habitat equipment checked before long closures to ensure stable temperature and humidity
Animal Welfare Considerations
- Hermit crabs were not purchased in painted shells
- Habitat includes multiple natural shell options
- Students understand that hermit crabs may burrow underground for extended periods during molting
- Molting crabs are never disturbed or dug up
Final Readiness Check
- Habitat has been running for several days before introducing hermit crabs
- Temperature and humidity remain stable throughout the day
- Classroom care responsibilities are clearly assigned
When these items are in place, your classroom environment is prepared to support healthy hermit crabs while giving students the opportunity to observe natural behaviors and learn about responsible animal care.
